The Saskatchewan and South Saskatchewan Rivers have been nominated for national heritage status. The Heritage River program is an economic development program designed to help local groups provide good stewardship for waterways and identify economic opportunity as well as build a sustainable management plan for the river community.

We’ve been working hard on this project alongside our partners – Meewasin Valley Authority, Partners for Saskatchewan River Basin, Parks Canada, Ministry of Parks Culture & Sport, Tourism Saskatoon and Community Futures Midsask.

The next phase is to develop a plan in consultation with local stakeholders regarding the stewardship of the rivers. That will include community consultations. We expect the plan to be completed near the end of 2012.

We’re excited about the opportunities that will be explored as we move forward with the Nomination process. More and more, citizens are concerned about a balance between the ecological, economic and social benefits that our natural resources provide. This project will ensure there is a plan going forward as development grows along our river.
