FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Community Futures Saskatchewan celebrates excellence in community economic development with annual awards

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Community Futures Saskatchewan is pleased to announce that Don McDonald is the winner of the award for Excellence in Community Futures Volunteerism and Community Futures Visions North and Community Futures Beaver River and Community have jointly won the annual Excellence and Innovation Award.

The Community Futures Awards, which are supported by Western Economic Diversification Canada, recognize an outstanding economic development project undertaken by Saskatchewan's Community Futures organizations and the outstanding contribution of an individual in furthering the success of the Community Futures program.

"Two of the greatest assets of the Community Futures program remain the volunteers who lend their valuable time, expertise and leadership to our boards of directors and the ability of each Community Futures office to respond innovatively to the specific economic development needs of their community and region. The recipients of these awards truly reflect these strengths," said Lori Ries, Chairperson of Community Futures Saskatchewan.

Volunteer Award: Don McDonald, Community Futures South Central

Don has been a member of Community Futures South Central since its inception in 1994. Don was one of the instrumental players in organizing and founding the CF organization in the region. During that time Don also played key roles in municipal politics and local economic development. He was elected Reeve of the RM of Dufferin in 1991 and served until his retirement in 2013.

Excellence and Innovation Award: Northern Visionaries Gala, Community Futures Visions North & Community Futures Beaver River

Community Futures Visions North and Community Futures Beaver River partnered with Northlands College in this video competition aimed at building leadership. Thirty-eight Northlands College university program students submitted self-made videos that centred on such themes as local opportunity, technology, creativity and community development.

Winner Dale Apesis's video focused on personal challenges he has overcome, his subsequent work with youth in the community and the need for living a healthy lifestyle. For his efforts, he won a trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for Astronaut Training Experience, and a $1,250 bursary.

The Community Futures Program strengthens rural economies by providing small business loans and assisting entrepreneurs through counselling and training. Each Community Futures organization delivers a variety of services ranging from technical and advisory services to businesses, and loans to small and medium-sized businesses.

Community Futures offices also assist community and volunteer organizations with their projects through planning and helping them access government programs and partnerships. Community Futures is supported by Western Economic Diversification Canada.

Community Futures Saskatchewan is an association representing the 13 Community Futures organizations established throughout rural and northern Saskatchewan.
