An interview with Willi McCorriston

We recently had the honour of working with Willi McCorriston, owner of Insight Signs & Decals Inc. and Safety Evolution Inc.. She so graciously shared her insight into what it's like being an entrepreneur and how working with CF Meridian helped her navigate business.

  1. What were some challenges you have faced in your business?

The most challenging aspect of being a business owner/manager is staffing and management of staff.  This hasn’t changed since I started in the workforce at a young age, or since I started my first corporation with my former husband in 1996.  It is an ongoing challenge to find, maintain and develop a good team.

Secondarily, I would say assistance with financial management of a business.  I was fortunate to participate in one of Meridian’s early training programs to encourage entrepreneurship, and to have obtained a business education that supported my goals as a business owner.  Not every person who is inclined to be self-employed will be able to take training like this, or perhaps to apply it effectively, especially when the challenges of running a start-up are at their most stressful. 


  1. How has CF Meridian helped your company reach their goals?

Financing would have to be #1.  The barriers to financing have always been high, and this is increasing over the years.  There is no question in my mind that many businesses in our area would not exist if a program like Meridian were not available to help people get things off the ground. 

Support is a very close second to financing.  If I have a question about pretty much anything business-related, I know I can ask at Meridian.  If they don’t know, they will source the person who does know.  That is invaluable to me as a business owner.


  1. What have been the greatest benefits you’ve received from working with CF Meridian?

Support. Knowing that if I hit a wall with a business challenge that the people at Meridian can help me find a ladder to get over it, or an axe to get through it.  Help to find out which tool is needed in which situation, advice on whether to hit a problem hard or let it soften on its own. These are business skills that are difficult to develop, and it is priceless to have a place to go to weigh those options and make choices that keep you and your business moving forward.


  1. Would you recommend working with CF Meridian to other business owners? And why?

Absolutely, for all of the reasons I have outlined above. 

  1. Financing with terms that make sense and is offered with support
  2. Human Resource and Financial advice (PST, GST, Payroll Management, Income Tax etc.)
  3. Humanity – Meridian is not a Financial Institution, it is a group of people that actually want to see their clients succeed.  They understand that having healthy, well-run private businesses in a community is essential to its health and the well-being of the people who live there. 


  1. What is one phrase of encouragement you have for other individuals who are operating a business? 

Just one?  Can’t do it… 

Keep Moving Forward. 
Don’t let a “No” from someone who isn’t qualified to give you a “Yes” in the first place stop you. 
It’s ok to slow down, it’s ok to change the plan, but keep your eye on the goal. 
Be creative but also stay productive.  There is magic in momentum.
